Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) and Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) possessed two of the most iconic voices in rock history. Beyond their massive success, they shared a profound friendship and, unfortunately, a tragic destiny.
Their bond began in the early 2000s and grew so close that Chester became the godfather to one of Chris’s children. Musically, they shined together and gave their fans unforgettable moments, such as during the 2008 Projekt Revolution tour, where they made history performing duets of “Crawling” and “Hunger Strike.”
Tragically, both musicians fought silent battles with depression. On May 18, 2017, Cornell took his own life. A completely devastated Chester said goodbye to his friend by singing “Hallelujah” at his funeral. The grief over the loss proved to be too overwhelming; exactly two months later, on July 20, 2017—the very day Chris would have turned 53—Chester died by suicide in the same manner.
Although baseless conspiracy theories about their deaths circulated online, the harsh reality highlights the critical importance of mental health awareness. Today, they are remembered not just for the fatal coincidence of their departures, but for their unparalleled talent and the eternal brotherhood of two rock giants.
